Afghanistan in September 2026: the most important developments in security
Afghanistan's security news in September 2026 was dominated by fighting with Pakistan. On September 21 Pakistan launched airstrikes in Afghanistan, and Afghan civilians were killed. On September 24 Pakistan struck 10 sites in Afghanistan after drone attacks, and clashes erupted again along the border on September 25. Earlier in the month, Pakistan's military said security forces killed 15 militants trying to cross into Pakistan from Afghanistan.
On September 11, the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the CIA released dozens of presidential daily briefs from before the attacks, including warnings about al-Qaeda plots and a report that Osama bin Laden considered attacking the United Kingdom. Assessments published on the anniversary said al-Qaeda remains a threat, and a report said the group is regrouping in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.
Germany deported 22 more men to Afghanistan on September 1, and the US Department of Justice deported an Afghan woman in a terror court case.
