Pakistan in August 2026: the most important developments in society
In Pakistan in August 2026, a fire at a major hospital killed 14 newborns, according to officials. Earlier in the month, a mountain disaster drew attention. An avalanche struck climbers in Pakistan's mountains on July 31, and early reports spoke of 10 climbers missing and two dead. Rescuers recovered the remains of an American climber on August 1 and resumed the search for the others. On August 6 the bodies of four climbers, including British mountaineer Nirmal Purja, were flown by air ambulance to Islamabad, and the rescue operation concluded.
Unrest in Pakistan-administered Kashmir continued to shape public life. The Lahore chief of Jamaat-e-Islami denounced a crackdown on Kashmir solidarity protesters, and Pakistan broadened its restrictions on foreign media, a step that journalists and rights groups condemned. On August 6 the sons of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan voiced concern for his health on the third anniversary of his imprisonment.
