Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Greenland are advanced, export-oriented economies with strong institutions, and they shape Arctic, Baltic and North Atlantic security out of proportion to their population. The standing issues are Arctic competition over shipping routes, resources and military build-up, strategic control of Greenland, Russian hybrid operations against Europe, NATO deterrence on the Eastern flank, and tensions between Europe and the United States. At home, welfare commitments, migration and energy transition are under pressure. This page holds news, politics, economy and security for the Nordic countries, month by month, with the standing conflicts explained.

Russia and European states are in conflict over security in Europe. Russia wants NATO to stop expanding and to recognize its claims in Ukraine and its security interests. NATO and the European Union want to deter Russia, support Ukraine, and protect their own territory.
The Arctic is disputed as melting ice opens new waters, seabed and shipping routes. Russia claims sovereignty over its northern coast and the Northern Sea Route, while NATO states and the European Union build up patrols and defences. China seeks a commercial and scientific presence, and the United States pushes for control of Greenland.
Nordic economies diverge on monetary and investment strategy. Denmark's central bank raised its key interest rate, while Norway's $2.3-trillion sovereign fund proposed large cuts to US Treasury holdings and trimming government bond holdings. Danish analysis found AI-adopting companies are hiring fewer young and highly educated workers, and Oura delayed its US IPO.
Sweden's parliamentary election produced no clear winner, with the left bloc holding a slim lead and the far right eyeing a government role. Prime Minister resigns after election loss, and Andersson gave up government formation after her election win. Meanwhile, the US signed Arctic security deals with Denmark and Greenland, and Norway's King Haakon VIII took the oath after Harald's death.
Nordic security posture hardens against Russia. Finland joined France's nuclear deterrence initiative and, with Sweden, intercepted Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea; Finland also ran Europe's biggest civil defense exercise since the Cold War. Danish intelligence warned Russia could attack NATO within months and flagged Russian sabotage plans, while a Russian ship was seized in Norway.
Immigration and asylum policy is the dominant societal tension, with Denmark planning deportation centers outside Europe by 2027 and Finland tightening rules for foreign students and family reunification. Sweden's tough asylum system draws European attention as it turns back years of mass migration. A man set himself on fire at Copenhagen's immigration agency.
