Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus and Malta are Mediterranean EU members that link Europe with North Africa and the Middle East, and they carry much of the responsibility for migration, maritime security and border control. The standing issues are EU migration and asylum policy, the EU budget, European strategic autonomy and defence burden-sharing, tensions with the United States over trade, and political fracture in Spain. Italy's energy market is in a state of direct government intervention. Eni and IP capped fuel prices at the pump, with Q8 joining by September 29, while Eni weighed extending the cap through year-end. Meloni abolished the vehicle ownership tax for cars and motorcycles and the government approved a nuclear power revival after 40 years.
Meloni's government has become Italy's longest-lasting since WWII, and she has launched her campaign for 2027. Her administration is advancing a nationalist social agenda — a school burqa ban and foreign student cap — while a Bari rally and the Cernobbio conference showcased both support and criticism. A Rome court convicted three Egyptians in the Regeni kidnapping.
Italy has deployed its navy to protect merchant ships in the Bab el-Mandeb, explicitly declining to wait for slow EU action against Houthi threats. Domestic security incidents include a pupil pepper-spraying and stabbing a teacher in Rome. In Spain, police shot a man holding two elderly hostages in Madrid and seized two tonnes of cocaine from a yacht linked to a Balkans drug network; Greece suffered a fatal F-4 crash and a deadly Athens building explosion.
The dominant societal tension is between government-driven cultural restrictions and grassroots housing protests. Italy is moving to ban face veils in schools and cap foreign students, sparking national debate. In Spain, tens of thousands protested in Madrid over the housing crisis after the eviction of an 87-year-old woman, and earlier protests erupted over the Ceuta migrant crisis.
