Australian Broadcasting Corporation Faces Multiple Internal and External Pressures

In Australia in early August 2026, the ABC faced several developments at once. The head of investigations left the broadcaster while a Four Corners investigation continued, and the ABC apologised to mining magnate Rinehart over a reference in a TV show. Separately, police reflected on a TV interview given by the grandmother of a missing boy named Gus, and investigations were underway into a surgery mix-up at a Melbourne hospital.

Other stories from the same period included councils replacing grass with native wildflower meadows on verges, a prominent queer figure facing backlash over a Liberal candidacy in Geelong, and an anti-abortion campaigner clashing with a senior Liberal at a meeting. A family left Tuvalu amid rising sea levels, and a headline referenced a "Mamdani effect" enraging Trump.
