President Donald Trump has renewed his public push for the United States to acquire Greenland. He stated that it is "unacceptable" for the US not to control the territory and that he "can't rely" on Denmark, which currently governs Greenland, to protect it. Trump suggested that NATO should lead the process of Greenland joining the US.
In response, Denmark has pushed back against the idea, and some US lawmakers have moved to block any potential attempt by Trump to acquire or invade Greenland. Trump dismissed Greenlanders' reported reluctance to become part of the US as "their problem."
The situation revives a proposal from Trump's first term, which was previously rejected by Denmark, and has become a point of contention ahead of a planned meeting between Trump and Danish officials.
