A significant cabinet change occurred as Trump removed Kristi Noem from her position as Homeland Security Secretary, naming Senator Markwayne Mullin as his choice to succeed her. Mullin, described as a hawk on illegal immigration, would take over a department that had faced criticism over its leadership. On the domestic security front, the FBI investigated several violent incidents as terrorism. These included a shooting at a bar in Austin, Texas, that left three dead and 14 injured, where the suspect wore clothing with an Iranian flag emblem, and separate attacks in Michigan and Virginia. Federal officials linked the Virginia gunman to ISIS support and cited an antisemitic motive for the Michigan attack.

The U.S. military reported destroying more than 30 Iranian ships and was repositioning assets in the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump demanded Iran's unconditional surrender, ruling out diplomatic negotiations.
