Domestic

Japan faced a series of significant domestic challenges in January. A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the western coast, while record-breaking snowfall caused major travel disruptions, canceling dozens of flights and stranding thousands of passengers at airports. In Tokyo, several unrelated incidents occurred, including a house fire that spread to six buildings near JR Asagaya Station, a violent eviction that left one person dead and two stabbed, and an alleged human trafficking case at a massage parlor. The capital also reported a shortage of crematoriums leading to two-week waits.

Separately, a government report indicated a troubling rise in suicides among school children, which has become the leading cause of death for young people in Japan, representing the highest rate among major industrialized nations.

International
