The account of the Commission and the agreement's supporters
Europe's carmakers, engineers and chemical firms have paid tariffs of up to thirty-five percent to enter a market of two hundred and seventy million people that China is taking over. The agreement removes them, secures lithium and other raw materials, and commits both sides to the Paris climate accord. The farm quotas are small, phased in over years, and backed by a safeguard that can suspend them. At a time when America is closing its market, Europe cannot afford to turn down partners.
