Japan Times · April 2026

• reports government actions and statements without evaluative language
• covers both positive developments (military drills, university plans) and negative ones (corruption scandals, arrests)
• uses neutral attribution for official statements ('says', 'plans', 'calls for')
• includes business and economic news with no editorial slant toward Japan as a country

Coverage is predominantly factual and mixed in topic; no consistent positive or negative framing of Japan as an entity. Headline 10 notes a potential political cost for Takaichi but is about a politician, not the country itself. The outlet does not use hostile or celebratory language toward Japan.

• personalized critique of Trump as reckless or destructive
• framing U.S. actions as risky or failing
• distancing language around U.S. claims and threats
• focus on U.S. setbacks and diplomatic isolation

The outlet's stance is toward the U.S. as a country, but coverage is overwhelmingly focused on the Trump administration's actions and rhetoric, which are treated critically. Headlines about non-Trump U.S. entities (e.g., SpaceX, Bessent) are neutral or factual. The negative stance is driven by editorial framing of U.S. foreign policy as destabilizing and ineffective, not by hostility to the U.S. as a nation.

• portrays Trump as reckless and destabilising
• uses evaluative verbs like 'gloats', 'slams', 'attacks'
• frames Trump's actions as failures or dangerous escalations
• employs critical labels like 'demolition man of global order'

Headlines 2 and 13 mention a ceasefire and face-saving, but these are exceptions; the overwhelming majority frame Trump negatively, with the outlet's own voice using hostile vocabulary and delegitimising characterisations.
