China faces security challenges and regional tensions in Southeast Asia

Several security and diplomatic incidents involving China are happening in Southeast Asia. Indonesia evacuated 26 Chinese nationals after a rebel attack on a gold mine in Papua. Separately, the U.S. ambassador to the Philippines said the U.S. will not abandon the Philippines amid China's assertiveness in the South China Sea, which China calls a provocation.

In other regional developments, China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand conducted a joint patrol on the Mekong River. Reports also indicate Chinese drone exports to Russia have surged since 2022, with shipments routed through Thailand.
