The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won a major victory in civic elections across Maharashtra, India's second-most populous state. The party and its allies are set to control the powerful Mumbai civic body, the BMC, for the first time, ending a 30-year hold by the Thackeray family's Shiv Sena faction.
Separately, the BJP has appointed Nitin Nabin as its new national president, replacing JP Nadda. Nabin is the party's youngest-ever chief. The political landscape in Maharashtra was also affected by the death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash, for which the state has declared three days of mourning.
