Gunfire and explosions heard near airport in Niger's capital

Heavy gunfire and loud explosions were heard overnight near the international airport in Niamey, the capital of Niger. Residents reported the sounds of blasts rocking the area.

Calm was later restored. Niger's military ruler vowed retaliation for the attack on the airport.
