EU Proposes Canada as First Associate Member

In September 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union wants Canada to become its first associate member. She made the proposal while hosting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for talks on deepening cooperation. Von der Leyen also called for creating a "European Security Council" and described the partnership as a response to an "openly hostile world."
