An official autopsy concluded the death was a homicide caused by asphyxia, directly contradicting the agency's initial statement that the man had died by suicide. A witness account alleged that guards pinned and choked the individual.

International

Cuba's severe and ongoing economic crisis, exacerbated by the collapse of support from key ally Venezuela, remained a central regional concern. Reports described a major humanitarian crisis on the island, with life for residents characterized by extreme hardship, a situation intensified by renewed economic pressure from the United States. This domestic turmoil is driving increased emigration, which analysts warn could create risks for neighboring countries such as Mexico. In response to the crisis, China initiated emergency aid shipments to Cuba, with the first delivery containing rice as part of urgent, multi-million dollar support authorized by Xi Jinping. Separately, Nigerian groups offered condolences to Cuba following the killing of Cuban aid workers in Venezuela.
