India: Humanitarian

Delhi is dealing with two major, separate problems. The city's air pollution is so severe that officials have repeatedly imposed and lifted emergency restrictions, with doctors warning the toxic air is causing a public health crisis. At the same time, a series of violent crimes has occurred in the city, including the killing of a 12-year-old boy by his stepfather and the murder of a pregnant SWAT commando by her husband.

Several different events have been reported from the city of Mumbai. In one incident, passengers on an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Krabi became aggressive over a long delay, leading to two people being removed from the plane. Separately, a woman in Mumbai was reported to have stabbed a former partner during a New Year's party. Other stories from the city include local cricket players being required to wear face masks during a Ranji Trophy match and a profile of a man who turned his personal struggles into a life dedicated to helping others.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed the risk of the Nipah virus spreading from India to other regions as low. The organization stated that the risk to the region and globally remains low.

Heavy snowfall and rain have caused major disruptions in the Indian-administered region of Kashmir. The weather has closed highways, grounded flights, and paralyzed daily life in areas like Srinagar. Separately, a medical college in Kashmir was shut down by authorities. Reports indicate this happened after Muslim students earned most of the admissions to the institution.
