The United States and Israel launch a major military attack on Iran

The United States and Israel carried out a joint military attack on Iran. Explosions were reported in the capital city of Tehran, with video showing smoke rising over Jomhouri Square. Israeli media reported strikes hit a presidential headquarters in the city.

Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes across the Middle East. Israel declared a nationwide state of emergency. Airlines suspended or cancelled flights to and from the region following the attacks.

Turkish communications chief Fahrettin Altun condemned what he called a 'direct armed conflict'. The attack, referred to by some as 'Operation Lion', has created major instability in the region.
