U.S. officials and reports say Iran has laid naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments. The reports indicate fewer than ten mines have been deployed so far, and Iran has targeted fuel vessels in the area.
Iran's envoy has stated Tehran intends to keep the strait open, while also admitting to a strike on a Thai vessel there. However, Iran's Revolutionary Guards have vowed to keep the waterway closed following a call from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, creating conflicting messages about Iran's intentions.
The situation has led to confusion, with reports that Iran is allowing some countries' ships to pass through being called 'premature' by other governments. The strait remains a focal point of regional tension.
