Gangs have controlled most of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, since 2024, and by early 2026 aid workers said the violence included a campaign of mass sexual assault: Medecins Sans Frontieres reported in late January that rape was being used systematically to terrorize residents. Haiti's transitional presidential council, in office since 2024 with US and Caribbean-community backing and criticized by opponents as unelected, dissolved in early February and handed power to a new prime minister. A drone campaign against armed gangs killed several hundred people, including at least 60 civilians, a Human Rights Watch report said in March. Chad sent police in April to join the international anti-gang support mission, and Washington weighed ending Temporary Protected Status for more than 300,000 Haitians living in the United States.
